Situated just outside of Chavez and near the Spanish border, this is a perfect jumping-off point for journeys around northern Portugal, and seems to be a hub of activity around the town, especially the restaurant. The restaurant was lovely and had huge portions of regional cuisine. The staff is incredibly nice, and the proprietor is a genial host. Just a great slice of life in northern Portugal.

It is a nice place to stay with spa facilities, ideal for a little escape.
Good breakfast. There is a restaurant, and the meals are ok, but a little expensive.
If you like tranquility and calm days I would recomend you to stay only from monday to friday, because in weekends the hotel and facilities are very crowdy, to much guests for me.
We've stayed from thrusday to saturday and the difference was huge, even the breakfast was very much enjoyable in friday than saturday.

Everything was comfortable and convenient at this hotel. There is free parking behind the building, cafes and restaurants nearby. The staff were efficient and friendly, even offering to help with luggage. I loved the antique fixtures and pink marble floors on the staircase. The price was great.

I love Chaves, small ancient town which has a river going through it with its own Roman bridge going across it… wonderful restaurants, the food is amazing here in the north of Portugal! Amazing places to stay with fabulous Portuguese restaurants! You’re also close to one of the nicest wine regions in the world! If you drive go trough Régua up the Douro where the grapes are grown! Unbelievable gorgeous, truly stunning

The bridge that dates from Roman times and is normally shown...
The bridge that dates from Roman times and is normally shown in photos is the interesting bit of Chaves. The rest is tired and seems to have suffered economically. The last place we stayed was Guimares. I'd stay 2 days there and not stay in Chaves next time.
That said, apparently there are quite a lot of historical Catholic things here, but not my scene at all.

We really, really liked Chaves.
We really, really liked Chaves. We stayed in the Castelo Hotel which is superb, excellent room - with tea and coffee making facilities! We felt we got a lot of hotel for our money. Very clean and comfortable with excellent staff, helpful and friendly. The castle (museum admission price €1, well worth it just for the views from the top) and its immediate neighbourhood is close by and pleasant to stroll around. An easy walk down to the river brings you to the Roman bridge, a perfect place to sit in the sun and lose an afternoon over a beer or two.
Our first evening meal we had at Taska das Caldas and wished we’d spent our second evening there, too. It’s “characterful”, an “experience” but in a good way! Very friendly host greeted us with a white port, then, because we couldn’t decide on starters, brought lots of lovely taster sized portions. The mains were excellent. No room for dessert we just finished with coffee and were bombarded with shots of various águardentes. Didn’t half sleep well!
The only disappointment was wanting to walk round the park only to find it closed for works.

The city is amazing.
The city is amazing. It has grown so much since I last been there some 30 years ago. The thermae museum is for free and it's very informative, restaurants are abundant and serve great food. Bars ensure some nightlife and the river has many options of entertainment. The kid's park on the main square near the Tamega is of superb quality

Chaves is a very interesting and picturesque town.
Chaves is a very interesting and picturesque town. It has lots of nice, reasonably priced restaurants and bars. We found a nice restaurant just down the stone steps from the Roman bridge. The "house red" was excellent.

Its a small town so everything is within easy walking distance. There were nice restaurants and bakers. The streets in the old part are very narrow with overhanging balconies in different colours. There is a spa taking its water from the hot spring with a range of different treatments.
2 days was long enough though. Unless you want to do day trips with the car to other nearby attractions.
This was seriously FIVE STAR QUALITY!!! The entrance had real ancient Roman artifacts designed into the wall decor, EVERYTHING was impeccably decorated, modern furniture, and I cannot praise our room enough!!! Our room was HUGE and a view of the castle with all impact windows & blackout curtains. The bathroom was all marble, gorgeous! And the bed was a KING size, real king size, not two twin beds, rare for Europe! The breakfast was five star delicious! LOVED THIS HOTEL!!!
The pool is lovely. The location is terrific for walking into town and down to river. The hotel is seamlessly inserted into a historic fort. Nice historic feeling with modern amenities. The grounds were beautifully maintained. The staff was very helpful in figuring out vegetarian food options for us from menu. The breakfast buffet was handled extremely safe and was delicious. Hotel was spotless and staff enforced mask policies.
Breakfast offered was continental style buffet and provided a lot of choice. The hotel has been built within an old facade above a Roman archeological dig. The staff were hospitable and very helpful. Many excellent restaurants in the area. Restaurant Taberno Benito was excellent and great value if you want to eat traditional Portugese cuisine. Can't recommend it highly enough, but book early or you won't get a table.
Very generous and tasty breakfast, with homemade jams--always a winner with me! The apartment was a little tired but totally clean, safe and warm. The owner was extremely kind, welcoming and friendly.
The town itself is fairly interesting but does seem to have suffered economically in recent years.
The people, as normal in Portugal, are delightful.
This was our 3rd visit in 9 months and we have another booked in July. For us it is conveniently placed and excellent value for money, if you want a 5* hotel, then pay 5* prices. The owners and staff are lovely, very friendly and informative, the same this time as our first visit last year. It's why we returned.
The hotel is right by the castle and within easy walking distance of the sights and the Roman bridge. Parking is available immediately under the hotel with a lift. Our bedroom 105 was large, comfortable and well equipped. Breakfast was good. All the staff were welcoming and helpful. Very good value at €85 b&b.
A really nice place about a 10 minute drive from the historical center of Chaves. The people at the hotel are very welcoming and helpful. The room was very clean and comfortable. There’s a nice restaurant for dinner and breakfast is included in the price. There’s on-site parking. We would very happily return.
Everything was comfortable and convenient at this hotel. There is free parking behind the building, cafes and restaurants nearby. The staff were efficient and friendly, even offering to help with luggage. I loved the antique fixtures and pink marble floors on the staircase. The price was great.
Hotel was very clean, beds were very comfortable and the food was excellent. I can’t speak a word of Portuguese, but the staff could not do enough to help out. The owner even insisted I park my motorbike in his garage. Fantastic place to stay.
Spacious room very clean with terrace and table and chairs - very peaceful . It is a mile or so outside the town of Chaves. The centre of Chaves has a great river with pleasant green areas and walkways along the river - well worth a visit.
We had a really lovely 2 night stay. We had the evening meal both evenings which was fantastic and really good value. Staff very friendly and helpful. Lovely terrace to enjoy a beer / wine. A quirky hotel but would definitely go back.
One of the best hotels in Chaves. The swimming pool it's amazing. The staff are so kind and helpful couldn't ask for more. And the restaurant it was so good at a great price! I feel so relaxed the all stay. Will return and recommend!
An oasis just off the highway in a small village in farm country. Beautiful stone hotel, gorgeous pool and terraces, fantastic food, welcoming staff. We loved everything about it, could stay there for a week easily and happily.
Very good hotel to stay in the north of Portugal, very good relation between price and service obtain. Breakfast is good and the staff is very kind and they always try to keep costummers satisfy. We will came back for sure!
Fantastic place to stay when in Chaves…Centrally located, clean, safe and friendly!!
absolutely no worries when staying here, perfect place to enjoy the scenic and amazing city that is Chaves
This place is a small well-decorated hotel, near the center of the city and the popular riverside area. You can walk from here to most of the city, the breakfast is also a highlight.
